I absolutey love Gyarados.
Ever since RBY, I've liked it, but now it is plain awesome. Shame it is quite easy to counter.
or is it?

ok, 1st set I don't like much.
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 188 HP / 176 Atk / 144 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Earthquake
- Taunt
- Dragon Dance
The bog standard Tauntridos set.
Boring as fuck, but can irritate skarmory somewhat.
only use paired with mag, or awesome predition ability and Zapdos / fire Pokemon / Gengar.
<3
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 48 HP / 96 Atk / 148 Spd / 216 SAtk
Naughty Nature (+Atk, -SDef)
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Flying] / Double-Edge / Frustration
- Hydro Pump
This is the set that me and toy created a while back.
It is my favourite set, and it's only counter is Zapdos - but every set of gyarados can have HP Rock > Flying, so that beats it.
D-E / Frustration we had as an option too, which can put massive dents in zap.
It's speed EVs are set out so it hits 351 Spd after 1 DD to outrun any noob gengar and any other 350 speeders.
It's SAtk means it 2HKO's Skarm, Forry and Weezing. It kicks the shit out of Donphan, who usually walls it shittless, and it OHKO's Aerodactyl on the switch - scratching another counter.
put's masive dents in Steelix as well.Special dos.
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Hydro Pump
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Flying] / Earthquake
meh, not a fan tbh, though I did make an awesome team based on CM Passing Celebi passing its +SAtk to this.
worked well for surprises and was awesome fun.
Counters things that would normally assume it to be physical, like Skarm, Weezing, Donphan, Claydol, etc
cb next.
Gyarados (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 164 HP / 216 Atk / 128 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Double-Edge
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
Scary thing this.
Shame it has one of the worst physical movepools ever ._.
Thunder Wave is cool, but you could run Sleep Talk or Flail over it.
About it. If you really want, you can run Hydro Pump > it, and give it naughty + ~210 SAtk taking loads of Atk away, but meh.
More of a support.
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 140 SAtk / 40 SDef
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Roar
- Thunder Wave
More defencive supporting Pokemon.
is over looked a lot, but with it's awesome HP, and Defences, can be quite cool with spikes support.
STalk.
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Atk / 128 Def / 32 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Roar
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
About now i was running out of Ideas, but i remembered a Ms toy used against me once.
this is it.
lol
looks stupid, but it works in exactly the same way Articuno does, and was a fucking whore.
crediting tazzlerFinal mention goes to the most overlooked sets in history. I want to see people use this a lot more.
Gyarados (M) @ Liechi Berry
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 220 HP / 136 Atk / 152 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Flail
- Hidden Power [Flying] / [Rock] / Earthquake
- Endure
- Dragon Dance
It has the sweeping potential of a god.
make sure that you dispose of the ehings your chosen set can't handle - if you have EQ, make sure gengar is gone foe example, and win.
leave for late game, and make sure your oppononent isn't using tar.
Can use more speed to outrun things such as maggy etc to get in an endure before you quake it.
meh
amazing set.
Other Options: HIDDEN POWER [ROCK]! if in doubt, and you want to counter Zapdos more than heracross and co, use HP rock.
Fire blast, but Pump hits weezing too.
Body Slam, Hyper Beem (lol) though off a 2x DD it will OHKO most stuff xd, and maybe Thunder.
the rest I mentioned.
Counters: Zapdos!!!! Skarmory - without Pumps, Fire Blast or Electric moves, Weezing - without Pumps, Forretress - without Pumps / Fire move, Aerodactyl, Solrock, Lunatone, Donphan - all can be beaten if you run Hydro Pump.
and jolteon, as long as you don't Quake it, seeing as it will still outrun you even if it switches in on your DD turn.
Opinion: I personally think that DD Pump dos is possibly one of the very best sweepers in the game. This isn't a bias opinion either. Run HP Rock or Frustration > HP Fly, and it has no solid counters.
I strongly suggest trying it out.
